Police: Suffolk Man Nabbed For Shooting At Cop While Fleeing Crash Scene

A 27-year-old man who allegedly fired gunshots at a police officer on Long Island during a chase last month was taken into custody following an investigation.

Leroy Jones was arrested on Sunday, Jan. 5, following an investigation into a Middle Island incident that saw a Suffolk County Police officer shot at during a foot chase following a traffic stop.

According to police, a woman was driving a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder westbound on Middle Country Road when a 2020 Volvo sedan traveling southbound on Wellington Road struck the passenger side of her vehicle at approximately 8:20 p.m on Dec. 23.

An officer in a marked patrol car responded to the scene, at which point, Jones, of Middle Island, allegedly fled on foot, leading to a foot chase with the officer. 

During the chase, Jones allegedly fired a handgun at the officer and missed. The officer returned fire and continued the pursuit, though Jones was able to successfully flee the area.

The other driver involved in the crash, and her passenger, was transported to Stony University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation led Suffolk County Police detectives to Jones was arrested and charged with:

  • Aggravated attempted murder;
  • Attempted murder;
  • Criminal use of a firearm;
  • Criminal possession of a weapon;
  • Criminal possession of a controlled substance;
  • Resisting arrest, and;
  • Leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with personal injury.

Jones is currently being held in police custody and is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Monday, Jan. 6.
